The family of Murray of Ochtertyre, in the parish of Monzievaird & Strowan, Perthshire, has its beginnings in the late 15th century, stemming from Patrick Murray, a younger son of Sir David Murray of Tullibardine. There is no indication that Patrick, who died in 1476, had any interest in Ochtertyre (although he was granted property in the vicinity, at Easter and Wester Dollerie, in the parish of Crieff, in 1467) but it is known that his widow, Katherine Balfour, and his son, David Murray, had a tack of Ochtertyre from no later than 1488. David was dead by 1510, and in that year James IV feued the lands of Ochtertyre and Carroglen, both in the crown lordship of Strathearn, to David's widow, Margaret Pitcairn, and his elder son Patrick. If Patrick can be considered the first Murray laird of Ochtertyre, then it was the seventh laird, Sir William Murray of Ochtertyre (d. 1681), who purchased the estate of Fowlis Easter in 1669 and was created first baronet in 1673. Sir William Murray (1801-1861), who succeeded as 7th baronet in 1837, adopted the additional surname of Keith on his marriage in 1833 to Helen, only daughter of Sir Alexander Keith of Dunottar, knight-marischal of Scotland. The descent continued unbroken through the eldest son until 1956, when the 9th baronet, Sir William Keith Murray (b. 1872) died unmarried. He was succeeded by his nephew, Sir Patrick Ian Murray (1904-1962), son of the 8th baronet's third son, Patrick Keith Murray. The present and 12th baronet, Sir Ian Keith Murray (b. 1965) succeeded his father in 1977.
