J. Alexander Downie was a housepainter in Laurencekirk, London and Montrose. At his death he bequeathed £600 to be applied to secular education in the parishes of Laurencekirk, Fordoun, Fettercairn, Marykirk, Garvock and Arbuthnott. Disposal of the income was to be entirely at the discretion of the trustees. The first appointed were William Alexander, farmer; David Dickson, bank agent; Alexander Don, bank agent; Alexander Taylor, farmer; and John Keppie, farmer, all resident around Laurencekirk and Fettercairn. They decided to set up three bursaries of £6 each to be awarded each year to two boys and a girl between the ages of 13 and 15, based on a competitive examination. The first bursary was awarded in 1874.
