(Robert) Laurence Binyon (1869-1943), poet, art-historian, and critic, was the son of the Rev Frederick Binyon of Burton-in-Lonsdale, and Mary Dockray. Binyon was educated at St Paul's School and Trinity College, Oxford where he was awarded a first class in Classical Moderations, 1890 and a second in Literae Humaniores, 1892. He joined the British Museum in 1893, firstly in the department of Printed Books, and then in the deparment of Prints and Drawings, 1895, where he became assistant keeper, 1909. In 1904 he married Cicely Margaret Powell, and they had three daughters. In 1913, Binyon was given the charge of a sub-department of Oriental Prints and Drawings. In 1932 Binyon became the keeper of Printed Books, and he retired in 1933.
Binyon lectured in America four times between 1912-1934, and in China and Japan, 1929. He travelled frequently to France and Italy, and in 1939 he occupied the Byron chair of English Letters, Athens. In recognition of his service with the Red Cross during the First World War he was created a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour. Binyon was awarded an honorary LL D by Glasgow University, 1921. He was made a CH in 1932, and an honorary DLitt, Oxford and an honorary fellow of Trinity College, 1933. He was also honorary LL D of Glasgow University, 1921. He was a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, and president of the English Association in 1933-1934. Binyon's publications include: 'Primavera: Poems by Four Authors' (1890); 'Catalogue of Drawings by British Artists and Artists of Foreign Origin working in Great Britain preserved in the Department of Prints and Drawings in the British Museum' (1898-1907); 'The Life and Work of J S Cotman' (1903); 'Painting in the Far East' (1908).
