Robert Hamiltone, WS, fl 1658-1698, Bailie Clerk of Carrick, was the owner of the lands of Airds, Kirkosuell, Mayboill, Ayr, 1658. In 1670, he and his wife were admitted to the lands of Clongall, Clongall Muir, Clongall Mongomerie, Nether Clongall, Dupillburn etc. In 1681, Robert Hamiltone, WS, also had an interest in property at Enochs, Mayboil, Ayr. In 1689, he is described as Robert Hamilton in Mayboill. In 1691, the lands of Tries, Rankinhill and Litle Roddeinruid in the Burrowfeild of Air [Ayr}were resigned to him. He was married to Janet Blackwood, fl 1670-1702, the daughter of Robert Blackwood and sister of Sir Robert Blackwood of Pitravie, and they had sons, Hugh and John and daughters, Margaret and Marion. He had died in 1698.
John Hamilton, fl 1691-1701, the second son of Robert Hamiltone was the Bailie Clerk of Carrick, 1691-1699. In 1699 there was also at that time a John Hamiltone, WS, in Edinburgh. In 1701, John Hamiltoune was baillie of Arran and had also been chamberlain to the Earl of Cassillis. In 1709 John is described as clerk of Borroustonness. He owned property at Kirkland of Mayboil, Ballonie alias Smithstown and Dangers Land. He had died before 1713 and his heir was his eldest son, Robert Hamilton, although some of his property reverted to his brother Hugh.
His eldest son, Hew [Hugh] Hamiltoun of Clongall [Glengall], fl 1691-1732, was a merchant in Ayr and late Clerk of Carrick. In 1693-1697, he was the town treasurer of Air, and in 1697 he was Chamberlain to the Earl of Cassillis. In 1701, Hugh Hamilton, acquired the lands of Kirkland, Smithstoun and Garlethine, in Mayboill. In 1711 he had some financial difficulties and in 1716 he had to sort out the financial affairs of his deceased brother, John. In 1691, he married Jean Fergussone, fl 1691-1721, the only daughter of John Fergussone of Castlehill, WS, fl 1691-1700, (died before 1702) and his wife, Margaret Birnie, fl 1691-1700, and sister of, Robert Fergussone and John Fergussone. Hugh and Jean had seven daughters and three sons, Robert, John and Hugh. In 1717, Hugh's second daughter, Janet, married Robert Alexander, minister at Girvan. In 1726, Hugh's third daughter, Agnes Hamilton, married William Somervel, younger, the eldest son of William Somervel, elder, merchant bailie in Renfrew, and in 1728, his youngest daughter, Marion, married John Campbell, minister at Barr. Hugh died in 1732 and was succeeded by his eldest son, Robert Hamiltoun of Bowtreehill (1698-1773). Robert married Jean Mitchell, widow of Major Garth and they had four daughters. His second son was John Hamilton, fl 1723-1724, who was a merchant in Ayr, and from whom the Sundrum family is descended. His youngest son was Hugh (1707-1788), minister at Girvan, who married Helen, the daughter of William Glen of Assolis, and they had a son and three daughters.
John Hamilton, RN, (b 1702) was the second son of Hugh Hamilton of Clongall. He settled in Jamaica where he and his elder brother, Robert Hamiltoun of Bowtreehill, owned the estate of Pemberton Valley. In 1739, he married Margaret (d 1759), the daughter of Hugh Montgomerie of Coylsfield, and they had a son, John. He was drowned returning from the West Indies.
John Hamilton of Sundrum (1739-1821), was Vice-Lieutenant of Ayr. In 1762, he married his cousin, Lillias (d 1827), the daughter of Alexander Montgomerie of Coylsfield, and they had several daughters and seven sons, John, Alexander, Robert, Hugh, Archibald Hamilton of Carcluie and Rozelle (1778-1848) (See separate name authority record), Thomas and Montgomerie. He was succeeded by the eldest son, John Hamilton of Sundrum (1764-1837), who served in the Royal Navy. In 1804, he married Christian, the eldest daughter of George Dundas of Dundas, and they had six sons and eight daughters. He was succeeded by the eldest son, John Hamilton of Sundrum (1806-1898), JP, who was a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Ayrshire Yeomanry Cavalry. In 1845, he married Katharine Barbara, te daughter of William Stobart of Picktree, Durham, and they had three sons and a daughter. The eldest son, John, died young so he was succeeded by his second son, John Claude Campbell Hamilton of Sundrum (b 1854), JP and DL, who was a Major in the Ayrshire Yeoman Cavalry. In 1877, he married Marion Armstrong, the daughter of Rev Edward Evans, and they had four daughters.
