Bebe Brune (1902-1983) was born Martha Law in Glasgow on 19 June 1902, the daughter of H.R. Law, a jeweller and lay preacher, and Martha P. Law. Bebe studied music and drama at the Glasgow Atheneum and attended Hillhead School. After leaving school she studied dentistry for two years and then changed to a secretarial course. She performed at local concert halls and venues connected with the church. In 1922 she met and married Dr J. Taylor-Broun, South African medical practitioner. However, in 1927 he returned to South Africa and Bebe, who did not want to go with him, moved to London to concentrate on her acting career. She secured Leo Torres, well-known impressario, as her manager and worked for a time at the Vortex club as a comedienne and playing the ukelele. In 1929 she began spelling her surname as Brune and altered her date of birth by 10 years in order to win younger acting roles. In 1932 Bebe spent some time working on experimental movies with a studio caleld U.F.A. in Berlin. In 1933 she returned to London and married Major Edward Holliday at Gretna Green. They had a flat in London at Hyde Park Gate although Edward was frequently posted back and forth to Germany. Bebe followed him whenever she could. Following an accident at a carnival in Olympia Bebe suffered recurring back problems which led to her decision in 1939 to quit movies. She lived in London throughout the Second World War and in 1945 she and Edward travelled through Europe and lived first in Berlin and then France. In 1950 they moved to Glydwish Hall in Sussex, England. They travelled widely in America, India, Japan and Russia. She died in May 1983 and Edward died in November 1983. Her film roles included 'Champagne' (1928), 'Weekend Wives' (1928) and several U.F.A. films.
