Ailsa Hospital, Ayr, was originally Ayr District Asylum, founded in 1869 by the Ayrshire District Lunacy Board, who constructed the buildings which are still the main core of the hospital. The original building had a total complement of 230 beds, later progressively extended to 650. Its name was subsequently changed to Glengall Hospital and then, in 1958, to Ailsa Hospital. From 1929 it was managed by Glengall Hospital Joint Committee, a sub-committee of a joint authority known as Ayrshire Joint Committee for Management of Institutions. In 1948, with the inception of the National Health Service, it transferred to the Board of Management for Ayrshire Mental Hospitals, and in 1974 to the South Ayrshire District of the Ayrshire and Arran Health Board.
