Single Person record details
Person Code NA20748
Corporate Name Western Scottish Bus Group
Dates 1905-
Activity The Scottish Motor Traction Co Ltd was formed in Edinburgh in 1905 and began operating in the following year. Despite its name it operated at first only in Edinburgh and West Lothian. Its expansion was rapid, however, and in the 1920s it took over a number of smaller operators. Increasing competition from the railway companies led to legislation in 1928 enabling them to operate bus services. The LMS and LNER bought into SMT and in 1929 a new Scottish Motor Traction Co was formed. This went on to acquire W Alexander & Sons of Falkirk and Midland Bus Services of Airdrie.
