James Grant, a son of the manse, was born in Knockando, Moray, in 1731. He was educated at Marischal College, Aberdeen, from 1744 to 1748, but did not graduate. He was licensed to preach in 1754, and was a missionary in Enzie parish from 1755 until he was ordained to Dundurcas parish in 1758. He transferred to Boharm in 1783 and was admitted to Elgin (junior charge) in 1788. There he acquired a reputation for being both gregarious and beneficent, and was able to pursue his broad antiquarian and historical interests, including Roman Britain and local history. He completed the parish entry for the Old Statistical Account. He died in 1814.
