John Stuart was born in Forgue, Aberdeenshire, in 1813, and studied at King?s College, Aberdeen, from 1828 to 1830 when he moved to Marischal College, Aberdeen and remained there until 1831. He was admitted to the Society of Advocates in Aberdeen in 1836. In later life he held the posts of Keeper of the Register of Deeds at General Register House, Edinburgh, and Secretary of the Spalding Club and of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland. He was a productive editor of editions of documents and texts illuminating various aspects of medieval and early modern Scottish history. He was awarded an honorary LL.D. by Aberdeen University in 1866, and died in Westmorland in 1877.
