Activity

The Paisley and Renfrew Railway was incorporated under Act of Parliament of 21 July 1835 (5 & 6 Will. IV, ch. lxxxv), and was later purchased by the Glasgow Paisley Kilmarnock and Ayr Railway under an Act of 1847 (10 & 11 Vict., ch. ccxxix). The GPK&A Railway amalgamated with the Glasgow Dumfries and Carlisle Railway as from 28 October 1850 under an Act of 1847 (10 & 11 Vict., ch. clxxxiii) to form the Glasgow and South Western Railway, which was re-constituted under a Consolidation Act of 26 June 1855 (18 & 19 Vict., ch. xcvii). The Glasgow and South Western Railway became part of the London Midland and Scottish Railway as from 1 January 1923 under the North Western, Midland and West Scottish Group Amalgamation Scheme dated 30 December 1922.The Paisley and Renfrew line, which was only just over three miles long, opened on 3 April 1837. Its purpose was to take passengers from Paisley town centre to the steamboats moored at their berths on the River Clyde at Renfrew Wharf. The initial steam locomotives were replaced by horse traction in 1842. In February 1866, buses replaced the service while the rail gauge was altered. The improved line re-opened in May 1866 with steam trains and the service continued until 1941 when severe war damage caused the Renfrew Wharf to be dismantled and removed.
