Manuscripts of poems and translations by Edwin Morgan (1920- ). Morgan was educated, in Glasgow and joined the English Department of Glasgow University in 1947, becoming Titular Professor in 1975. He published numerous volumes of poems, most of which were included in his Collected Poems, Manchester, 1990. Presented. 1968. 1984, by Edwin Morgan. MS.27493, ff.50-2 bought 1972. MS.27493 (i) Drafts of translations into Scots of 21 poems by Vladimir Mayakovsky, 1959-60 (f.l). All the poems were published in Morgan's collection Wi the haill voice: 25 poems by Vladimir Mayakovsky, Oxford, 1972. They are preceded by a typescript list by Morgan, 1968, giving details of previous publication. (ii) Drafts of original, poems, 1963-8 (f.36). All were published in Morgan's Collected Poems. They are preceded by a list by Morgan, giving details of previous publication. (iii) Working manuscripts of translations, 1982-4, of three medieval plays. The first two (ff.53, 67) were made for the Medieval Players and published as The Apple-Tree: a medieval Dutch play. Glasgow, 1982, and Master Peter Pathelin, Glasgow, 1983. The third, 'The Second Shepherds' play, is a translation into modern English and Scots of a play from the Wakefield miracle cycle (f.107). 126 ff. Folio and under.
