MS.27019-26 Manuscripts and typescripts of 'Mature Art'. MacDiarmid originally planned four volumes of this immensely long poem, but only one, In Memoriam James Joyce. Glasgow, 1955, was published. Parts of the rest appeared in periodicals or in later collections of MacDiarmid's poems. These papers contain numerous drafts and reworkings of sections of the poem, made over a period of many years. MacDiarmid frequently rearranged sequences or withdrew them for use elsewhere, so while some of the drafts and copies are substantial, others are fragmentary. The author's note (f.2) describes it as one of the shorter incidental lyrics in his unpublished 'Cornish Heroic Song for Valda Trevlyn'. Parts of it were published in In Memoriam James Joyce. MS.27020 Typescript, with MS corrections and notes, of 'Mature Art', 1938. It includes a substantial introduction (f.6) and a list of the subordinate poems incorporated in the text (f.l4); some of these were published in MacDiarmid's later collections and others are apparently unpublished.
