History
|
William Duthie Sons & Co. owned one of the three largest shipbuilding yards in Aberdeen in 1800. The company became John Duthie Sons & Co. in 1815, and later Duthie Sons & Co., based in Torry. In 1870 it was one of only three yards left in Aberdeen. Though they used to build fine shipping and luxury steamers, by 1882 they had to concentrate on the fishing trade for business. They produced around ninety steam trawlers up to 1903, and then concentrated on steam drifters. The post-war recession hit the shipbuilding business badly, and the Duthie yard closed in 1925
