The Book of Deer was written in Latin in the 9th century, but has a Gaelic colophon and marginalia of the 12th century. These are chiefly copies of grants of land, valuable to historians partly because they are early examples of continuous Gaelic text, and partly for the references to people and places in them. The Book of Deer has been in the possession of Cambridge University Library since 1715.
