Charles Thomson Ritchie was born in Dundee in 1838. Most of his education was private. He was elected MP consecutively for two London constituencies from 1884 to 1892, and held the offices of Secretary to the Admiralty (1885 - 1886), President of the Board of Trade (1895 - 1900), Secretary of State for Home Affairs (1900 - 1902) and Chancellor of the Exchequer (1902 - 1903). He was Rector of Aberdeen University in 1902, and created Baron Ritchie in 1905. He died the following year.
