William Minto was born in Alford, Aberdeenshire, in 1845, and educated at Aberdeen University, from which he graduated with outstanding honours, and after a brief stay at Oxford he became assistant to Professor Alexander Bain at Aberdeen, at the same time making a study of English literature. He moved to London in 1873 and entered journalism, writing on politics and literary criticism and contributing to the Encyclopaedia Britannica, and later finishing three novels. He married in 1880 and was in the same year appointed to the chair of Logic and English in Aberdeen in the footsteps of Professor Bain. While in Aberdeen, he continued to write and to contribute critical articles to local journals. However, he suffered ill health, and died in 1893.
