George Joachim Goschen was the grandson of Georg Joachim Goschen, publisher in Leipzig. He was born in 1831 in Stoke Newington and educated at Rugby and Oriel College, Oxford, graduating BA in 1853 and MA in 1875. He married Lucy Dalley in 1857. He was a partner in Messrs Fruhling and Goschen from 1854 to 1865, and Director of the Bank of England from 1858 to 1865. He was elected MP successively for the City of London, Ripon, Edinburgh (East) and St. George's, Hanover Square, between 1863 and 1900, and held other notable posts including Lord Rector of Aberdeen University from 1887 to 1890. In 1900 he was created Viscount Goschen of Hawkhurst, and he died in 1907.
