The Hay family have been settled in Scotland since 1160 and are connected to the ancient Norman family of La Haye in Normandy. William de la Haye, Butler of Scotland under Malcolm IV (1141-1165), was granted a charter of the feudal barony of Erroll in the Tay estuary, Perthshire in c 1178-1182. The 5th Baron, Sir Gilbert de la Haye (d 1333) was awarded the lands of Slains in Aberdeenshire and the hereditary office of High Constable of Scotland. The first Earl of Erroll was Sir William Hay (d 1462) who was granted the Earldom of Erroll and Lordship of Slains in 1452.
