George Gordon was the son of the 2nd Earl of Aberdeen and was born at Methlick in 1722. He came into the title in 1745 and was elected as a representative peer for Scotland from 1747 to 1761 and again from 1774 to 1790. In around 1759 he married Catharine Elizabeth, the daughter of Oswald Hanson of Wakefield, but also kept three brown-eyed mistresses, for one of whom he bought Ellon Castle in Aberdeenshire. He died in 1801 at Ellon. His son predeceased him in 1791, in a fall from a horse, and his grandson succeeded him.
