James Graham, 5th Earl and 1st Marquis of Montrose, (1612-1650), was the son of John, 4th Earl and Lady Margaret. In 1629, at seventeen, he married Magdalene Carnegie, daughter of Lord Carnegie. They had four sons and a daughter. James was a renowned Royalist Commander and was created Marquess of Montrose in 1644 and Captain-General and Commander in Chief of all the Scottish forces, but when he was defeated, in 1645, he left Scotland. After the murder of the King he returned to Orkney with a few followers, but was captured and in 1650 he was executed. Following the restoration, Charles II had his remains buried in state in St Giles, 1661.
James' first son, John, died at 16 and the title passed to his second and only surviving son, James Graham, 2nd Marquis (1633-1669). He married Lady Isobel Douglas, the widow of 1st Earl of Roxburghe, in 1656, and they had two sons and three daughters. James, called 'The Good' was made a Privy Coucillor on the return of Charles II and was appointed Extraordinary Lord of Session, 1668.
James Graham, 3rd Marquis of Montrose (1657-1684), married Christian (d 1710), the daughter of John, Duke of Rothes and was succeeded by his only son, James, who was created 1st Duke of Montrose, 1707. |
