Title |
Instrument of protest by James Dundas of Newlistoun, James Dundas, younger, his son, and Duncan Dundas, brother german of said James, elder, appearing in presence of James, Duke of Chattelarault Earl of Arran, Governor of Scotland, and John, Archbishop of St Andrews, conform to the tenor of a decreet arbitral by said Duke and Archbishop requiring them to attend at the market cross of Linlythgw in 'lyning clathis' and there, on their knees, to offer a naked sword by the hilt to John, Mathew and Thomas Steuart, brothers of deceased James Steuart of Craigyhall in sign of penitence for the slaughter of said James Steuart, and protesting at the non-appearance of said John, Mathew and Thomas. At lodging of said Governor in Linlythgw. Witnesses: Mr Robert Colwing, abbot of Colross; Sir William Hamiltoun of Machling, kt,; Sir John Hamiltoun of Prestoun, kt and Robert Hamiltoun of Brigis.
