Description |
Letter from the barons and freeholders, and the whole community of the kingdom of Scotland to Pope John XXII, dated at Arbroath. It sets out Scotland's early 14th-century status as an independent nation, supporting King Robert I's position as King of Scots and asking the Pontiff to persuade the English King (Edward II) to end hostilities against the Scots, so that their energy may be better used to secure the frontiers of Christendom. Nineteen of the original 46 seals remain appended. |
