Peebles Sheriff Court closed in 2015. Court business and records under 25 years old moved to Selkirk.
Peebles Sheriff Court operated within the Sheriffdom of Lothian and the Borders, which also comprised at the time the courts situated at Edinburgh, Haddington, Linlithgow, Duns, Jedburgh and Selkirk. (Haddington, Linlithgow, and Duns closed in 2015 also).
The court covered the area of Scottish Borders, wards 47-58., and historically Peebles-shire.
The sheriffdom of Peebles and Traquair emerged in the reign of William the Lion. On the abolition of the heritable jurisdictions in 1747 a sheriff-depute was appointed for the sheriffdom of Peebles. Peebles was joined to the sheriffdom of the Lothians in 1882. The current sheriffdom of Lothian and the Borders was established in 1975. |
