Linlithgow Sheriff Court closed in August 2013. Records covering 1983-2013 from Linlithgow and all court business moved to the new Livingston Sheriff Court.
Linlithgow Sheriff Court operates within the Sheriffdom of Lothian and Borders, which also comprises the courts situated at Edinburgh, Jedburgh, Peebles and Selkirk. The court covers the area of West Lothian.
A sheriffdom of Linlithgow existed from the twelth century, but was to some extent subordinate to Edinburgh and was frequently described as a constabulary within the sheriffdom of Edinburgh. It reappeared as a fully independent sheriffdom around 1450. In 1598 Parliament found that Bathgate had been anciently a separate sheriffdom. Following the abolition of the heritable jurisdictions in 1747 the sheriffdoms of Linlithgow and Bathgate were combined under one sheriff-depute. In 1865 the sheriffdom was joined with that of Kinross and Clackmannan to form the sheriffdom of Linlithgow, Clackmannan and Kinross. Then in 1882 Linlithgow was broken form this union and merged with the sheriffdom of Midlothian and Haddington to form the sheriffdom of the Lothians, to which Peebles was added a year later. The present sheriffdom of Lothian and Borders was established in 1975.
