Peterhead Sheriff Court operates within the Sheriffdom of Grampian, Highlands and Islands, which also comprises the courts situated at Aberdeen, Banff, Dingwall, Dornoch, Elgin, Fort William, Inverness, Kirkwall, Lerwick, Lochmaddy, Portree, Stonehaven, Stornoway, Tain, and Wick.
In 1840 part of the sheriffdom of Aberdeen was constituted a separate sheriff court district with the court sitting at Peterhead. This comprised the parishes of Aberdour, Crimond and St Fergus, Cruden, Fraserburgh, Longside, Lonmay, New Deer, Old Deer, Peterhead, Pitsligo, Rathen, Slains, Strichen and Tyrie.
As of The Sheriff Court Districts (Alteration of Boundaries) Order 1996, Aberdeen Sheriff Court District covers wards 7-12, 17 and 18 in the area of Aberdeenshire.
