Dunfermline Sheriff Court operates within the Sheriffdom of Tayside, Central and Fife, which also comprises the courts situated at Alloa, Arbroath, Cupar, Dundee, Falkirk, Forfar, Kirkcaldy, Perth and Stirling.
A sheriff court was established at Dunfermline in 1811 when the parishes of Aberdour, Beath, Carnock, Dalgety, Dunfermline, Inverkeithing, Saline, and Torryburn were assigned from Cupar Sheriff Cour. The parishes of Culross and Tulliallan which formed a detached portion of Perthshire were transferred to the Dunfermline sheriff court district on 15 May 1891. Part of the parish of Ballingry was added at an unknown date.
As of The Sheriff Court Districts (Alteration of Boundaries) Order 1996, Dunfermline Sheriff Court District covers wards 1-34 in the area of Fife.
