Description |
'Plan of the City of New York in North America'. Surveyed by B. Ratzer, Lieutenant. Engraved by Thomas Kitchin. Published by Jefferys & Faden, London. 1 1/4 inches = 1000 feet [multiple other scales]. Each sheet 658 x 987 mm, total plan size 1316 x 987 mm. Engraving. Dissected into two sheets. Linen backing. Plan of the City of New York and its environs. Streets named in the town. Surrounding land owners named. Field boundaries and houses shown. Rivers named. Edges of Long Island and New Jersey shown. List of references. References and title shown within a baroque style cartouche with figures of an Indian (Native American) man and a Colonial man surrounded by barrels. Compass rose. South West pictorial view of the city taken from the Governor's Island (site where view taken from is marked with star on the plan). View includes men talking and fishing, boats and ships heading towards and in the harbour, and the skyline of the city. Decorative border around the entire plan. Inscription within scrollwork cartouche with coat of arms: 'To His Excellency Sir Henry Moore Bart Captain General and Governer in Chief In and Over His Majesty's Province of New York and the Territories depending thereon in America Chancellor and Vice Admiral of the same This Plan of the City of New York anmd its Environs, Surveyed and Laid Down Is Most Humbly Dedicated by His Excellencys Most Obedient Humble Servant B Ratzer, Lieu[enan]t in His Majesty's 60th or Royal American Reg[imen]t' [sic]. |
