Description |
The Map of the World under the Great Qing Dynasty 'Daqing Yitong Tianxia Quantu'. Unattributed. Scale not given. 688 x 1170 mm. Block printed. Hand coloured. Linen backing. Map depicting China at the height of its expansion under the Kangxi Emperor (1654-1722), the fourth emperor of the Qing dynasty. Beneath the title, a catalogue of provinces lists the number of prefectures and counties that they contain. The map shows provincial boundaries and prefectural and district cities, as well as important military installations such as the Great Wall and frontier gates. The Yellow River and numerous other rivers are all recorded, and hills and mountains are shown pictorially. Sea routes used by merchant vessels in the South China Sea shown. European countries depicted in the top left hand corner of the map. Panel of explanatory text where the anonymous cartographer narrates how he redrew Huang Zongxi's map of 1673, in order to 'manifest the glory of this dynasty' in the form of territorial acquisitions, and improvements in government and administration, that had occurred since 1673. |
