Description No title. 'D 5.' No '21.' By John Erskine (d 1732), Earl of Mar.
Scale. 265 x 428 mm on sheet 285 x 459 mm. Ink and colour wash. Linen backing.
Plan of roof garden. Note 1: 'N.B. The covering of the roof to be of lead & that to be painted representing a Parter of Grass & gravell, & to be adorend w'th pots, cases & tubs, with trees & flowers. The fountains to be made play at pleasur w'th water from the four reservours over the triangular pavilions adjoining the bibliotheque, water coming to them from a machin on the rivolet running by the house & also the water w'ch falls on the roof of the library. Each room of the house where thers occasion for water may have also a pipe from these reservoirs & they are excellent in case of fire.' Note 2: (reverse): 'Antwerp 1730. Comparison of the Bigness if this house wth the Designe of one after the maner of the Roiall Pavilion of Marly. Each front of this Design after Marly, extends 140 feet, British, so that the four makes 560. Two of the fronts of this house being 113 feet and the other two being 85 each makes 396 so that this house is less in the extent of the fronts than the other 164. The fronts of the other house are 29 foot higher than this one, wch is the exact hight of Marly. The octagon library on the tope of the other house is 10 foot higher and 19 foot broader than that on this & the triangular pavilions on the top of this other house joining to the Bibliotheque are 5 foot higher & 16 foor broader than those on this. The other House has two story of entresols and no atique story & this house has no entresols but over three closets and has an Atique story.'
