The Collins family paper making business began when Edward Collins [?-1784], Gosforth, founded a paper mill at Dalmuir, Glasgow in 1746. The collection consists of mostly family letters and covers four generations of the Collins family centering on Edward Collins [1818-1886] and his wife Anne.
Edward travelled to Europe as a boy and corresponded with his parents, Edward [1794-1864] and Susan Collins. As an adult he attempted to build on the family business in Canada and his parents, sisters and brothers wrote to him frequently. Edward retained letters relating to his maternal grandparents (Bridget and Joshia Heywood) and other family members, the Swords and Laings.
Edward's son Hugh Brown Collins [1865-1929] also tried to set up business contacts in Asia and the United States but was unsuccessful and returned to Scotland. |
