Admin history The Mackenzies of Coul descend from Alexander Mackenzie of Coul and Applecross, son of Colin, XIth Baron Kintail. Alexander's son, Sir Kenneth Mackenzie of Coul, was created Baronet by royal patent to him and his male heirs, 16 October 1673. Coul House itself lies in the parish of Contin, Ross-shire.

Archival history The following collection of papers was received from two sources:
(1) GD1/1149/1-10; 12-17; 24-26; 29; 33-34 and 40 were received from Shepherd and Wedderburn WS. These papers were previously catalogued as GD242 boxes 57 and 58.
(2) The other papers were received from Russell and Dunlop, WS.
