About half the collection consists of family correspondence and official documents relating to the service of Private John Warnock Clapperton of the 9th Royal Scots Regiment, 12th Machine Gun Corps, in the First World War from January 1915 to February 1919. (On some envelopes he is designated 'Lance Corporal'). First stationed at Kilmarnock, he was later transferred to Belton Park Camp, Grantham, and then, in March 1918, to France where he was on active service for a short time before he was wounded. Following an operation to amputate his right arm in the field hospital he was brought back to hospital in Reading, where he remained until he was tranferred to the Edinburgh War Hospital at Bangour. He was discharged from hospital and the armed forces on the same day. |
