The Minister of Keiss and many of his congregation adhered to the Free Church and 'came out' at the Disruption of 1843. The congregation was left without a place of worship, and when the minister left the district, the vacant charge was reduced to a preaching station until a new church was built in 1852. Here the congregation continued to worship until 1894 when a further new church was built. The United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church of Scotland united in 1900, forming the United Free Church, and a number of the Keiss congregation followed this line to the United Free Church. However, a minority did not join the United Free Church and continued to worship as Keiss Free Church of Scotland. The congregation was subsequently linked with Wick Martyrs Free church, with both congregations worshipping in their separate buildings, until 1980 when the two charges were formally united to form Wick and Keiss Free Church. |
