Letter from Alexander Pope, minister at Reay, explaining why he needs an augmented stipend: (i) kirk and manse are in a `centrical' position `where there are no inns where a stranger can lodge so that a minister must either be a stranger to hospitality, which is contrary to the word of God, or he must have an open table for strangers, week day and sabbath day'; (ii) strangers have to remain for some time owing to rapid rivers on each side of the kirk; (iii) position of the manse is the most inconvenient in Scotland, almost without a glebe; (iv) there are two yearly fairs in the place, which expose the minister to trouble and expense; (v) there are difficulties in leading peats; and (vi) the recent rise in cost of living. 15 Feb. 1736, (f.122).
Letter from Alexander Pope, complaining `it seems I'le groan away my life under discouragements as my predecessor did and not have what will give me a decent burial'. 9 (?Dec.) 1737, (f.125).
