In 1835, William Mitchell, Cupar and John Moubray [Mowbray], Inverkeithing, approached the Earl of Mar to lease his lands in Clackmannanshire to mine for minerals. After a meeting in April with four others, John Craich, The Whins, David Ramsay, Leith, Alexander Meldrum, manager of the Devon Iron Company and Ebenezer Ramsay, Alloa. Together they formed the Alloa Colliery Company. In 1898 it became the Alloa Coal Company a limited company. The Company which had concentrated only in Clackmannanshire expanded into Stirlingshire in the late 1890s. During the 1920s the Company acquired a controlling interest in the Alloa Glass Works Co. Ltd. and on 1st January 1947 the company's assets were nationalised. |
