(1) 1721 Nov 23. Fortrose Robert Gordon to Andrew Sutherland, sheriff clerk of Sutherland. Urges him to convene the council as soon as the missive of election for the Convention of Royal Burghs. `It's exceedingly necessary for the interest of our friends to make as Good and Numerous ane Appearance as they can therat.'
(8) 1742 Feb 20. Edinburgh Printed circular letter from William Maitland [FRS, antiquary] to the magistrates of Dornoch. Requests a response to his queries, `concerning a great work, undertaken by me for the Honour of our country', which had been circulated to the royal burghs last July; he will be obliged to drop it if he receives no response. Asks for a copy of the first burgh charter.
(9) 1742 Apr 8. Dornoch Copy letter, magistrates to [Robert Gordon of Glendoick]. Congratulates him on appointment as Lord Advocate and reminds him of their support at the last election, against the opposition of Kirkwall and Tain.
(10) 1744 Mar 26. Edinburgh Robert Dundas, solicitor general, to magistrates. Warns them to alert merchants to imminent declaration of war by the French.
(18) 1813 Nov 7. Balmacara House, Lochalsh Hugh Innes, MP, to William Taylor, town clerk. Agrees to recipient's choice of newspapers, and has therefore ordered the London Chronicle and Edinburgh Correspondent to be sent. With related letters concerning the choice of papers (15-17, 19).
(23) 1821 July 30 Printed circular letter of enquiry by Commissioners on the Courts of Justice concerning the fees and duties of the town clerk and other court officials, with a copy of the clerk's reply, 4 Aug 1821 (24).
(25) 1833 Jan 22 Draft congratulatory address to the Duke of Sutherland on the conferment of his dukedom.
(27) 1886 Mar 6 Circular letter from the Edinburgh National Society for Women's Suffrage to town clerk. Solicits support in favour of the bill for extending the parliamentary franchise, with a suggested form of petition. |
