A sheriff court was held at Kilmarnock from 1846. Commissary business was conducted at the court from 1903. Kilmarnock Sheriff Court operates within the Sherifffdom of North Strathclyde, which also contains the sheriff courts situated at Campbeltown, Dumbarton, Dunoon (with its annexe at Lochgilphead), Greenock, Oban, Paisley and Rothesay.
As of The Sheriff Court Districts (Alteration of Boundaries) Order 1996, Kilmarnock Sheriff Court District covers North Ayrshire and wards 1-20 in the area of East Ayrshire.
