Description |
No engineer [J M Rendel]. Mostly detailed engineering drawings for the intended roadway: 1. Plan and elevation of suspension bridge at Montrose 2. Engineering drawings of iron components for Montrose suspension bridge 3. Engineering drawing of frames for suspension bridge at Montrose 4. Engineering drawing of wooden beams on suspension bridge at Montrose 5. Engineering drawings of repairs to saddles and chains in tower on suspension bridge at Montrose 6. Engineering drawings of trussed framings on suspension bridge at Montrose 7. Photocopy of note by W F Ogg on suspension bridge at Montrose
These plans were produced in 1839 by J M Rendel, government engineer to Exchequer Loan Board. The bridge was designed and built in 1829 by Capt. Samuel Brown RN, and finally approved by Telford. A few months after completion the first accident occurred when a chain broke, a 'temporary' repair by Brown was effective until 1838 when Rendel carried out a 'permanent' job. Shortly afterwards a hurricane destroyed the roadway and it was this repair for which Rendel produced the plans. In engineering terms they are of particular interest because Rendel introduced system of trusses on either side of the roadway, throughout the suspended part of the roadway between the two towers, an idea which made a major contribution to the stability of suspension bridges. At least three other sets of these plans exist at the Archive Centre, Dundee, Montrose Public Library and at the Map Room of the National Library of Scotland. (Information supplied by W J Ogg in August 1987.)
