Description |
Under 13 Geo 3 c.43, 1773, 31 Geo 3 c.30, 1791 and subsequent Acts regulating the importation and exportation of corn, sheriffs were required to convene a number of local persons periodically to ascertain grain prices in their counties. From 1773 to August 1791 the sheriffs notified Collectors or chief officers of Customs at ports in their counties of the prices determined and from September 1791 informed the Receiver of Corn Returns in London. The sheriffs' responsibilities for making returns under the Corn Laws were ended by Act 1 and 2 Geo 4 c.87, 1821. The following volumes record prices returned for Lanarkshire. The members of the juries convened to determine these are also listed from September 1791. |
