Description |
The original chartulary, a quarto volume, has been lost. It was printed in 1833 by the Maitland Club from a transcript made by Walter Macfarlane, the antiquary, and checked from another transcript in the possession of the Duke of Montrose made by John Smith, writer in Buchanan. The above transcript, which is in an early eighteenth century hand, seems an independent one. It finishes, "Here ends the old register concisting of 128 pages & all the tittles of these chartors are writen with red letters tho' many of them want tittles, and also there be many of the same chartors twice registrat & som thrice through inadvertancy". The charters are numbered 5 to 116. There is probably a leaf wanting. The transcript also contains abstracts of the first 17 charters in the original chartulary |
