Contemporary Copy Retour of an Inquest made at Coldinghame, in presence of Patrick Cranstoune, bailie of Robert, prior of the monastery of Coldingham, on 5 May 1519, finding that James Paxtone was heir of Nycholas Paxtone, his grandfather, in (a) the four merklands with a cottage and fishing on the Water of Tweed, lying in the town and territory of Paxtone, barony of Coldinghame and sheriffdom of Bervyk and (b) the twenty shilling lands with pertinents lying in the town and territory of Aldincraw and sheriffdom foresaid; that the said lands and fishings are worth £5 Scots yearly and were worth as much in times of peace; that they are held of the prior of Coldingham by ward and relief, the said James rendering therefor the same services and annualrents that his grandfather rendered in times by gone; and that they are in the hands of the prior of Coldingham by the death of the said Nycholas, on account of the heir not following forth his right for the space of nine months or thereby |
