Description |
Acknowledges receipt of the double of his three letters to the "Tower". "I must confess that yow are of a good nature for if it would have gained me much geir I could not have condescended to have written to these people who doeth upon all occasiones speake so slightly of yow and your fathers familie to whom I think it a credite to be related to, and I am confident and its notorly known more antient then their own before. If yow had not in your letter told me that yow had your fathers advice in writing to these people, I would have undoubtedly presumed to have returned yowr servant for I was as sure as the sun shines that yow would meet with scurile language and a base unworthie answere, for if Cesnock be good at any thing its at the kailwife trade ................ My Ratchhound which I got from my Lord Polewarth is dead and I must entreate that yow would procure me ane other that has a good mouth .......................................... I shall truble yow no further but gives my cordiall service to yowr self, lady and sweet little Annie. I desire yow would give us ane account of your matteriall news and if it holds currant that the king will come doun to hold the Parliament, and if he shall not come who is said to be commissioner". (Signed) W(?) Maxuell.
P.S. "Cusing, In regaird yuour ladyies with child, I did nothing therin that may offendit hir, which I wold not spare to tell hir if she ware wtherwise". Undated but after 26th December 1690 when Sir Patrick Hume was created Lord Polwarth and before 23 April 1697 when he eas created Earl of Marchmont |
