Petition by the Magistrates and Council of Edinburgh and Sir William Maxwell of Calderwood to his Majesties High Commissioner and the Estates of Parliament, craving authority to buy a "pale" of bells for the High Church and to build a steeple at the West Port with the 20000 merks doted by the late Thomas Moodie to build a church in the Grassmercat, as the original purpose could not be effected on account of the site being designed for the place of public execution, and stating that Sir William Maxwell as heir of the said Thomas, was agreeable that the money should be so employed: Further craving them as the town had been at great expense in bringing in water to discharge all persons from taking up, breaking or spoiling the lead pipes, conduits, fountains or cisterns in connection therewith and for power to the magistrates to search for and punish such offenders, execute repairs etc. Date on back 1681 |
