Title |
Petition (undated) addressed to Alexander, Archbishop of Glasgow, and the remanent members of his Synod within his diocese, by Marie Schawe, spouse of Robert Dowgles of Auchintuliche, narrating that on 27 May 1664 her husband, who was for "divers weekes befoire beuitchid in ane distractioune as is weill knouin to all the countrie about the place wher he leivid", committed an "accidentall slaughter, haveing no forthought fellonie in his heart to the pairtie nor any malice whatsomever", and thereafter fled and has lain out since in great misery, wandering from place to place. He has sought by all possible means to satisfy the injured party who has refused to agree, so she therefore petitions his Grace and Synod to grant her husband respite from the censures of the Church in order to deal with the matter.
There is written on the Petition a Minute (dated at Glasgow 19 April 1666) whereby the Archbishop and Synod, out of compassion for the petitioner and her eleven children, recommend the Brethern of Dumbartane to forbear from any ecclesiastical procedure against Douglas till the Archbishop is acquainted therewith |
