Title |
Instrument of Sasine under the hand of William Mitchell, clerk, of the diocese of Glasgow, notary public, narrating that John Fergussoun, one of the bailies of the burgh of Air, by special command of the provost, bailies and councillors of said burgh, gave sasine to Thomas Knicht, as nearest and lawful heir of his brother-german Adam Knicht, lawful son of the late John Knicht, late dean of guild of the said burgh, of (1) (a) a merkland of old extent of Knoksoull formerly pertaining to the late John Broun, skipper, and now occupied by John Hutcheoun, lying in the Burowfeild of the said burgh (b) a merkland of old extent of Drumfairnhill pertaining to the said John Broun and possessed by William Rob, lying in the said Burowfeild, (c) one-half of the meadow of Sklaitbog formerly pertaining to the late Allexander Lockhart of Boighall and possessed formerly by John Gillespie and now by Gilbert Ritchart and his sub-tenants, lying in the territory of the said burgh between the other half of said meadow on the west, the lands of Stockrodding on the north, the king's highway on the east, and the lands of Sandefoord, Rudland and Duphoilli on the south, (d) an acre of land called Rudland formerly occupied by Hector Baird afterwards by John Gillespie and now by Gilbert Ritchart and his sub-tenants, lying contiguous with (c) supra within the territory of the burgh on the west side of the Castellhill, and (e) the tenement of land, back and fore, with yard and pertinents, formerly the property of the late John Cochrane, John Dalrymple and James Nicoll, thereafter successively of the late John Knight, grandfather of the said Thomas, John Knight, his father, and the said Adam Knight, lying on the west side of the High Street of said burgh, opposite the Meal Market, between the tenement of the late Allexander Lockhart and Patrick Hutcheoun, afterwards of William Wylie, mariner, and James Wallace, notary, thereafter of John McCrae and now of his heirs, on the south, and the tenement formerly the property of William Cauldwall and Mariot Schaw, his spouse, Archibald Gelle, John Caddow, merchant, and Robert Smith, now of John Pattersone, baker, on the north, all as described in Instrument of Sasine (dated 25th December 1640) under the hand of Quintin Kennedy, common clerk of the burgh of Air, in favour of the said Adam Knight; (2) seven acres of land, lying in the Sands of said burgh, which formerly pertained to the late William Rysyd, from whom they were lawfully apprised at the instance of the said John Knight, to whom in virtue of his apprising and infeftment they afterwards pertained and thereafter to the said Adam Knight, his son; which 7 acres are occupied as follows viz:- an acre in the Mid Sands and another in the Laich Sands by James Muir, 3 acres, of which [one] lies in the Comoun and two at the Penybusch, by John Stewart, an acre in the Laich Sandis by John Campble and another acre there by John Boill, all as more particularly described in the Instrument of Sasine No. GD86/558; (3) that new fore-tenement of land, under and above, with pertinents, pertaining to the late George Massoune lying in the Sea Vennell of the said burgh between the old tenement of the said George Massoune on the north, the close of the foresaid old tenement and the tenement of the late Elias Cathcart, now of David Cathcart, his son, on the east, the common king's highway on the south, and the said Sea Vennell and the fore-tenement of the late Robert Cunynghame afterwards of the said George Massoune, on the west; the Instrument of Sasine (dated 1 January 1641) under the hand of the said Quintin Kennedy in favour of the said Adam Knight having followed upon a resignation made by the said George Massoune; (4) the whole tenement of land back and fore, under and above, with pertinents, formerly the property of the late James Campbell, afterwards of the late William Rysyd, lying on the north side of the High Street of the said burgh, between the tenement of the late John Cunynghame of Mylnquarter, now of Peter Cunynghame, his son, on the east, and the tenement formerly the property of the late Thomas Pethein now of [ ] Chalmer, on the west; and (5) the back tenement of land, under and above, with pertinents, formerly the property of the said Thomas Pethein, afterwards of the said William Rysyd, lying on the north side of the High Street of the said burgh between the tenement of the late Robert Campbell, now of John Wan on the west, and the tenement of the late James Campbell, thereafter of the said William Rysyd, and afterwards of the said John Knight, on the east, the Instrument of Sasine in favour of the said Adam Knight being dated 25 December 1640: which lands are held as follows viz: Nos. 1 [and 2] supra of the provost, bailies, councillors and community of the said burgh in feu-farm for payment yearly of 4/- Scots for (a), 4/- Scots for (b), 33/4 Scots for (c), 2/- Scots for (d) and 12 pence Scots for each of the said seven acres (No.2); and Nos. (e), 3, 4 and 5 of the king in free burgage for the service used and wont. Done upon the ground of said lands on 25th February 1650 |
