Scroll Letter regarding the dispute between the Laird of Tinwald and Adam Cunnynghame concerning the right of the former to moss within Megshirst. Before Cunnynghame had acquired right to the lands, through the negligence of the Laird of Kirkmichaell and James Lawsone, his tenant, the Laird of Tinwald and the remanent feuars of Burntskerse had encroached within the bounds of Over Dargavells and had made common some of the crooks of its meadows. On 20th June 1620 Cunnynghame obtained decreet of removing before the Lords of Session against Tinwald, his mother, and the feuars, ordaining them to remove from the meadows and mosses of Dargavells that lie on the south and south east sides of Megsmyre and raised letters of horning and lawburrows thereupon, which out of respect to Tinwald and at the suit of the feuars he refrained from putting to execution. He thereupon divided and gave to them part of the said meadows and mosses "but past no right thereon but ooost a great ditch from thee westmost part of Megshirst to thee Water of Locher and so posest all thee meadowes and ground upon thee east and southeast parts of thee said ditch and namet thee saids crooks of meadowes after this name, viz:- thee Goodmans Crooks, whilk now bee thee space of eight or nyne zeires past hee hes causet haine maw & winn and cary to Drumfrize for feeding of his owne horsses". The feuars ratified and approved of this division by Renunciations, one dated 11 May and the other 27 August 1621, "subscrivit bee a number of nottars befor famous witnesses, viz. Mr. Thomas Ramsay is one". Undated but after 27 August 1621 |
