Title |
Instrument of Sasine under the hand of Andro Ker, clerk of the diocese of St. Andrews, notary public, following upon and narrating a Precept from the Chancery of King James VI (dated at Quhythall 18 December 1604) addressed to his sheriff and bailies of Linlythqw, granting to Alexander Earl of Linlythqw, and Dame Helenore Hay, his spouse, and the longer liver of them in conjunct fee and the heirs male lawfully procreated and to be procreated between them, whom failing, to the heirs male of the said Earl whomsoever bearing the name and arms of Levingstone (1) the lands and barony of Levingstone (described as in No. GD86/353) with the exception of the 40 shilling lands of Breich which are omitted and (2) the lands of Carribberis, lying in the sheriffdom of Linlythqw, which formerly pertained to Helen Carribber and Katherine Carribber, two of the daughters and heiresses of the late John Carribber of that Ilk: which lands and barony of Levingstone were resigned by Patrick Hammiltone of Levingstone and Eufame Setone, his spouse, with consent of John Cokburne of Clerkintone, into the hands of the King in favour of the said earl and spouse, and which lands of Carribberis were similarly resigned by (1) the said Helen Carriber and John Kingcaid, her spouse, with consent of Alexander Levingstone of Hallis of Airth, John Kingcaid of Abbottisgrange and Andrew Hall in Falkirk, at whose instance they are interdicted, and (2) the said Katherine Carribber and Thomas Merkill in Watterstone, her spouse: Moreover the King incorporates the said lands into the barony of Levingstone, and erects the town of Levingstone into a free burgh of barony to be called the Burgh of Levingstone, with the usual powers to the inhabitants thereof. Sasine given by James Hammiltoune of Wilcoxholme, sheriff depute of the sheriffdom of Linlythqw, to the said Earl, and to George Hay, attorney for his spouse, at the peill and fortalice of Levingstone upon 26th February 1605 |
