Title |
Extract from the Register of the Presbytery of Dunbar of entries relating to an action between Mr. Jhone Lawder, minister of Cokburnespeth, and Mr. Thomas Hepburne, parson of Auldhamstokis. Hepburne refused to obey an act of the last Synodal Assembly held at Edinburgh (subscribed by Richard Thomsoun, clerk) ordaining him to obey and fulfil a decreet arbitral of the brethren to whom he had submitted himself regarding the planting of the kirk of Cokburnespeth in which he was ordered to pay to the minister of the said kirk 250 merks upon 2nd February 1599. |

Description |
The Presbytery asked the parties to agree to a new submission to them but while Lawder was willing Hepburn refused. On 17th April 1599 the Presbytery suspended Hepburne from the ministry till the next Assembly for refusing to obey the act of the Synodal Assembly but "thocht it not meit to depose him til the nixt Assembly leist the benefice suld fal in the handis of the patrone". The names of the following brethren are mentioned viz:- Mr. Alexander Home, Mr. Edward Hepburne and Mr. David Lyndsay. The entries are dated at Dunbar 29th January, 13 and 20 February, 6 and 14 March 1598-99 and 5, 10 and 17 April 1599. Certified by Mr. Patrik Carkettill, clerk. |
