Certified Copy of Charter of Resignation under the Great Seal of King James VI whereby, with consent of John, Lord Thirlestaine, chancellor, Sir Thomas Lyoun of Auldbar, knight, treasurer, Sir Robert Melvill of Murdocarnie, knight treasurer-depute, Mr. Robert Douglas, provost of Lincluden, collector general, and Sir John Cokburne of Ormestoun, justice clerk, he grants to William Cairnecroce of Colmeslie and his heirs male whomsoever and assignees (1) one-half of the lands of Selmure alias Colmeslie, with the manor place, houses etc. thereof, the lands of Westersyd of Housbyre, and one-half of the lands of Langlie with the croft called Cellararhauche, lying in the lordship and regality of Melros and sheriffdom of Roxburgh, and (2) the lands of Meikle Catpair lying in the regality of St. Andrews and sheriffdom of Edinburgh; which lands were the property of the said William Cairnecroce and his predecessors and were formerly held of the abbot and convent of Melros and of the archbishop of St. Andrews respectively, and which he personally resigned at Halyrudhous in favour of himself into the hands of the king, who incorporates the lands into the free tenandry of Cowmeslie so that sasine taken at the mansion and manor place of Cowmeslie should stand for the whole: To be held de nobis, rendering for Selmure alias Colmeslie 50 stones of butter or 6/8 for each stone, for Westersyd, Langlie and Cellararhauche, £16 and 20 stones of butter or the said price, and for Mekill Catpair £16, extending altogether to £55: 6: 8, and doubling the feu-farms on the entry of heirs: Reserving the feu ferms and duties of the lands formerly held of the abbot of Melros to James, commendator of Melros, during his life or until he has been satisfied therefor.
