Title |
Instrument of Sasine under the hand of Alexander Coill, Master of Arts, clerk of the diocese of St. Andrews, notary public, following upon and narrating a precept under the testimony of the great seal of King James VI (dated at Striviling 31 July 1568) addressed to the sheriff and his bailies of Linlythgw and to John Cokburn, narrating that the King, with consent of James, Earl of Moray, regent of the kingdom, had granted to Agnes Cokburn, spouse of James Hamiltoun formerly of Levingstoun, in liferent, and to Patrick Hamiltoun, his son and apparent heir, in fee, the lands and barony of Levingstoun viz:- the lands of the town of Levingstoun, Cousland, Stanyburn, Breich, Carmadenis and the Mains of Levingstoun with the peil, fortalice, manor-place and mill thereof, lying in the barony of Levingstoun; one half of the lands of Balormy, Buinsyd, Litle Parklie and Quhytbalkis; and the 40 shilling land of Gruikfute, all lying in the sheriffdom of Linlythgw; and that he had also granted to the said Patrick the office of sheriff of the sheriffdom of Linlythqw and the custody of the castle of Blaknes, with the fees, profits and duties pertaining thereto; which lands and office formerly pertained to the said James Hammiltoun and afterwards to the King by reason of escheat through the said James being convicted of treason in a justiciary court held in the Tolbooth of the burgh of Edinburgh on 21 May 1568: He therefore commands them to give sasine to the said Agnes and Patrick in terms of the charter granted to them.
